Chapter 1:
Chapter 1:
Manhattan meets New Haven
The sky had been cloudless since she boarded the flight, yet Mia Noriega still felt uneasy in her seat as her father’s private plane flew over the Long Island Sound. She’d barely managed to get into Lakeshore Drive Academy, an elite boarding school just south of New Haven, CT, but her grandmother had the alum status and was after all, a Kendrique. Her expulsion from her all-girls private school in Manhattan certainly didn’t help with the process and if she thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did.
When someone gets expelled from school, it usually is no big deal (except maybe for the family). But when that someone happens to be the daughter of a multi-billionaire and is attending the most elite private school in Manhattan, and can no longer use money to pay for her, let’s just say wrong choices, the story usually ends up somewhere on Page Six.
“M?”
Mia was startled. Beside her was Kaleigh Echols, her best friend since prep.“You’re staring blankly into space again,” she reminded Mia. “Seriously, relax. It’ll be fine.”Mia sighed. She looked outside the window and noticed that they were less than 10,000 feet from the ground. 9,000 feet. 8,000. 7. 6. 5. 4. 3. 2.—
“Good trip?”
“Yeah,” Mia lied. She was seated across Headmaster Callahan, in an office that looked (and smelled) more than a hundred years old. Her father was late, as always, leaving her alone with the headmaster.
“You do realize that you’re going to have to work harder if you want to catch up with the rest of your classmates, don’t you? Since you’re about a week late, there’s going to be tons of things that you’ve missed. And you will be meeting with all your professors to discuss your class standing within this week.”
Mia nodded. As far as she was concerned, she didn’t really care. She’d gotten a 4.0 GPA in Dukewerth and had more than enough time to party. If she had a choice, she’d rather move to China than be stuck in a room with an odd smell—seriously, what the hell is that?—but she didn’t. If only she hadn’t done what she did, she’d be in Mr. G’s 5th period History class right now (listening to her iPod Touch and IM-ing).
“—semester abroad so you’ll be taking her room in Kendrique Hall. Any questions?”She shifted her attention back to the H. She remembered her dad mentioning a Kendrique who was gone and that she’d be staying in her room. But half-listening to both her dad and H. Callahan made it impossible to know who they were talking about.
“No, I’m fine.” She glanced at her Cartier watch. Her father was almost an hour late. “Dammit,” she said under her breath when she saw a forty-something man and his 17 year old daughter emerge from the doors.
Dammit indeed.
+stay tuned for chapter 2+
